ACADEMIC, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY COOPERATION

 

 Strengthening academic cooperation was one of the main focus areas of South Africa during the previous chair period (2017-  2019) of the IORAG, and continues to inform the activities of the SA IORAG Secretariat. Building on the previous  successes will be a priority during the South African IORAG Chair period for 2022-23.

 

Science, Technology and Innovation Research Areas

Marine Science

Marine science  research and capacity development is an important  focus area for South Africa and underpins many of the priority areas of IORA. 

Water Science

Water and sanitation research, development, innovation and technology transfer is a new focus area within IORA under the Working Group for Science, Technology and Innovation (WGSTI). Engagement with IORA is facilitated through the Water Research Commission. 

Regional Networking

IORAG Regional Roadshow 2018

The IORAG Regional Chairperson along with members of the SA IORAG Steering Committee undertook a Regional Roadshow in 2018 to strengthen academic networks within Africa.

Strengthening Ocean Observing in Africa 2019

This meeting provided an opportunity for African marine scientists to share their institutional priorities and network with other IORA Member States, as well as engage with other International programmes.

10th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium

The SA IORAG Secretariat hosted a Special Session at the 10th WIOMSA Symposium in Tanzania, 30 October – 04 November 2017. The aim was to bring together other African IORAG members and as a public information session on South Africa’s priorities during the chair period.

 

11th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium

The SA IORAG Secretariat hosted a Special Session at the 11th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium in Mauritius, 1-6 July 2019. Using the opportunity provided by this, the SA IORAG invited the IORA Secretariat to participate in a Special Session on the 5th July 2019.

12th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium

The SA IORAG Secretariat hosted a Special Session at the 12th WIOMSA Scientific Symposium in South Africa, 10-15 October 2022. The session focused on showcasing the programmes and opportunities for researchers through IORA.
