The Blue Economy was selected as a cross-cutting priority area due to the opportunities the oceans provide for generating employment, food security, poverty alleviation and ensuring sustainability in business and economic models in the Indian Ocean region.

The Sustainable Blue Economy Conference was hosted by the Government of Kenya, co-hosted by Governments of Canada and Japan. The overarching theme for the event was the “Blue Economy and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.
